Should you choose bifold, sliding or French doors?
When it comes to extending your home or building that dream renovation, one of the most common debates we hear at Keenan Project Designs is which doors people should choose to enhance their space. With bifold, sliding or French door options all on the table, it is easy to see why people find the decision so difficult. To help, we architects at Keenan Project Designs have broken down the pros and cons of each, which will hopefully make the choice a little clearer for you.
Bifold Doors
Let’s be honest, bifold doors definitely give homes that ‘wow’ factor, which is explains why they seem to be a must-have feature of any modern-day renovation.
Of course, one of the main reasons bifold doors are so attractive is the incredible amount of natural light they let into the home. They create a visual and physical link between the inside of your home and outdoor area, seamlessly removing any boundaries between the two.
On a practical level, bifold doors can be measured to fit any length, ranging from just two panels, up to sometimes, eight, depending on the span of the house, opening inwards, or outwards, to suit the space in which they sit.
Bifold doors are more space-efficient than the other options, while offering a safe option, with their structure, toughened glass and lock system adding that extra level of security to your home.
Of course, having the luxury of bifold doors comes at a price. It’s no secret that bifold doors are the most expensive of the three. That said, it often pays off, with research showing that bifolds have the potential to add serious value to your home.
Sliding Doors
Sliding doors are usually made up of two or more large panes of glass, which slide across a single track and stack at the end.
A definite benefit of sliding doors is that you can open them as much or as little as needed. So, if you want the option to be able to easily let a gentle breeze in through a small gap, or perhaps you let the outside in by completely opening them, these could be the best choice for you.
If you are considering this option, you should be aware that the doors only open at about 65 per cent, with the last panel being static. You can, however, get around this, depending on wall space and budget, by planning for a pocket to be created in the wall for the door to slide into, which means creating a wider opening and losing any space.
Both the sliding and bifold doors have door tracks which are flush, flat to the floor, which means that there is no trip hazard between the inside and outside area. However, if you do decide to go for a sliding or bifold, then make sure a good drainage system is incorporated into the design, so the door is watertight.
French Doors
French doors, known to many as ‘double doors’, are definitely best suited for those on a budget and make the perfect fit when you don’t have a big opening.
Although they only open to about 180 degrees, you can add fixed glass panels on either side if you want and have the space. Having these fixed side glass panels will allow room for extra natural light.
Ultimately, French doors are traditional, providing an attractive and functional option, while remaining the most affordable option.
